Corn Syrup Shouldn’t Be Considered “All Natural”
Dear Editor,
There are strict regulations on what can be considered “organic.” However, there are very few on the word “natural.” There is high fructose corn syrup (or “corn sugar,” as the new marketing term goes) in many products that claim to be “all natural.” What’s so bad about high fructose corn syrup? There is a lot of labeling that has started to advertise that it does not contain this chemical, but why? Well, it only shuts down our body’s ability to say when we are full.

A Different Course
While cutting communications major requirements is a step in the right direction in helping students graduate on time, the changes should have focused on adding more practical coursework.

One Cent Water Tax Can Solve Calif. Deficit
Dear Editor,
Here’s a simple suggestion that could solve California’s financial deficit problem: If California would impose a tax of 1 cent per gallon of water, and/or at least $1 per gallon of gas, the California deficit would quickly be eliminated. It might also cause Californians (and following the same approach in other states, Americans in general) to be less wasteful of water and energy. It would help address the crucial issues of water shortage and climate change, particularly since pumping water uses 40 percent of the entire California state electricity supply. All countries in Europe charge over $4 tax per gallon of gas, covering their social needs. Rich America could similarly provide for its citizens. It is a path to responsibility. What do you think?

Peace-Washing Orgs Fail to Condemn Massacres
Dear Editor,
Occupations are illegal, immoral and violent and I’m with Students for Justice in Palestine as they recognize that and organize against it.

A.S. Should Create a Human Rights Board
Dear Editor,
Both at home and abroad, UCSD student orgs rightly engage in an expansive range of issues related to human rights, social justice and global development. But when it comes to carrying out their mission statements, all these orgs face the same obstacles on our campus. It’s hard to reach out to the people who would actually be interested in your events; the only people you can easily mobilize are the students already in your org, recruiting people you don’t already know in order to keep your org alive is intimidatingly uncertain, you don’t know which other orgs are actually active and no one knows what other orgs are planning (or whether there is room for collaboration with them). I think a deep-seeded reason why these problems are so palpable at UCSD is because these organizations lack a formal mechanism through which they are brought together.

Taking Initiative
A new UC system-wide tax created by the UC Board of Regents will increase transparency, but student fees should not be a source of its funding.

Education Should be Prioritized in Asia
Dear Editor,
Police in Gyeongggi Province have booked two Chinese brokers and 18 students for faking documents to enter Korean universities and are widening their investigation to find more such cases. The Chinese students, none of whom are qualified to attend university in Korea, paid 7 million won ($6,192) to 18 million won to each broker for a fake high school diploma and school reports, according to the police. The police informed the universities and local immigration offices of their violations.

Winne’s Political Protest Should be Remembered
Dear Editor,
Today, May 10, marks the 42nd anniversary of George Winne’s self-immolation to protest the American war in Southeast Asia. Winne, a UCSD undergraduate who was due to begin his graduate studies in the Department of History in Fall, was inspired by Buddhist monks who set themselves on fire to protest corrupt government practices in South Vietnam. The sign next to his body read: “In God’s name, stop this war.”
