After notching their fourth consecutive CCAA conference tournament title last week, the UCSD Baseball team’s season came to an end with two losses to Dixie State in the first round of the West Regional tournament.

Freshman Monique Portugal tallied her second multiple run home run in postseason play to launch the Tritons past No. 1 nationally ranked Valdosta State Wednesday, May 16.

With the regular season and CCAA tournament title in tow, the UCSD baseball team now heads up North to Keizer, Oregon where they will face off against Dixie State in the first round of the West Regionals.

There are roughly 4,495 colleges in the United States. That’s a statistic that students at a large, nationally ranked, relatively well-funded public university like UCSD tend to forget, because most of us applied to other large, nationally renowned public universities. But it’s something that’s hard to neglect in the realm of Division II softball, where big name universities take a backseat and where the landscape of creatively named, small higher education institutions moves to the forefront.

After going 5-10 to end the regular season the UCSD Baseball team seems to be peaking in the postseason, as the Tritons claimed the CCAA tournament title.

After taking the CCAA title to claim the sixth-seed in the West Regionals, the No. 24 UCSD Softball team will advance to the Regional Final against first-seed CSU Dominguez Hills this weekend, May 11 to May 12.

Last weekend, May 4 to May 6, the UCSD Club Baseball team took first place in the Southern Pacific Regional Tournament, clinching one of eight spots at the NCBA Division I World Series, to be held in Columbus, Georgia.
