▶ The UC Haiti Initiative will host a free film screening of the documentary “Haiti: Where Did the Money Go?” tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Bear Room at Price Center West. A question-and-answer session with film director Michele Mitchell will follow the screening.
▶ Chemistry and biochemistry graduate student Benjamin Madej will receive a $25,000 scholarship through the NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program to use toward his research in molecular dynamics graphics processing unit computing.
▶ UCSD psychologist Karen Pierce was named a candidate for TIME Magazine’s 2012 Top 100. Pierce was recognized for her work in early autism detection that could help children avoid developing severe behavioral and cognitive problems associated with the disorder.
▶ Traffic was backed up three miles on the southbound Interstate 5 from La Jolla Village Drive due to the university’s Triton Day held on April 7.
▶ An 18-year-old from Escondido died of a gunshot wound April 7. Investigators are trying to identify the circumstances under which she had been shot.

▶ Los Angeles police are searching for a suspect who punched two women in Little Tokyo while robbing a store on April 6. The suspect, described as a 5-foot-10 Latino man, punched two employees in the face before emptying the cash register.

Conan to come to UCSD
Comedian Conan O’Brien — of TBS’s “Conan” and “Saturday Night Live” fame — will host a talk as part of Sixth College’s tenth anniversary event, Sixth College Student Life Officer Elaine Scott confirmed Monday in an email. The April 20 event, held at RIMAC Arena, will also include a question-and-answer session with the TV star. According to Sixth College’s website, ticket dates will be announced next Monday, April 9.

Graduate Student Killed in Hit-and-Run
Graduate engineering student Sho Funai was killed Sunday, March 11 in a hit-and-run accident while walking in Ocean Beach. Funai was 23 years old.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, Funai was walking on the right shoulder of the eastbound Interstate 8 by the Nimitz onramp when he was hit at around 4:30 a.m. . Authorities have not said why Funai was walking on the Interstate at that time.
The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Mesa College student Nikolette Gallo, was arrested Sunday, March 11 after turning herself into authorities. Gallo was quoted in the San Diego Union Tribune as stating that she had thought that hit a sofa. ABC News reported that Gallo was released Tuesday, March 20 after posting a $50,000 bail.
Gallo will have a preliminary hearing in May. If convicted of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run, Gall faces probation to four years in prison.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Funai, who is originally from Palos Verdes, received his undergraduate degree in structural engineering from UCSD in 2010 and was expected to receive his M.S. in structural engineering this year. He had been working as an associate engineer at Goodrich Aerostructures in Chula Vista in January 2012, and had previously been a graduate student researcher at UCSD studying the impact of hail ice on composite structures.
Funeral services for Funai were held Saturday, March 17 at Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles.
