Pradeep Khosla made his first visit as chancellor-designate to the UCSD campus on Thursday, May 17. Khosla was honored at a welcome ceremony in the Great Hall in front of a crowd of approximately 250 students, administrators and faculty, including outgoing-Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.

UCSD’s new chancellor and a possible tuition increase topped the agenda for the Wednesday, May 16 UC Board of Regents meeting in Sacramento. The meeting was the Regents’ last of the academic year.

▶  A team of UCSD computer scientists has created an iPad App that will help users to identify most North American birds.

The UCSD communication department unveiled a new curriculum last week that lowers the number of required classes and eases elective restrictions for communication majors.

 The body of Guillermo Pino Jr., the UCSD student who went missing last month, was found in a hole in the Borrego Springs Desert on Saturday.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul’s will visit UCSD on Friday, May 4. Paul will be speaking at Warren Mall at 7 p.m.

▶ The UCSD Department of Arts and Humanities has been named one of nine universities that will participate in the Sony Digital Media Academy. The Academy aims to encourage more collaboration in the application of digital media.

According to the most recent admissions data, 2012 marks the first time in several years that UCSD is not the third most selective UC campus.

▶ UCSD receives the sixth highest amount of federal and private investments for Research and Development, according to a survey released last week by the National Science Foundation.
